I realize as Code for America comes to an end, that I've been exposed to so much that now the hardest part about leaving will be what do I want to keep learning about, and in what order. This visual rant is more or less an org chart I wanted to put together to remind me of what I want to focus on as I move forward. So I get out of bed and begin to type the thoughts that are so steadily racing through my mind. In the background I can hear the sounds that make New York so iconic, no pun intended. Tired from a productive day of ’iconathon-ing’, design charrettes, navigating the city, and now nearly two months after the initial kick off event, I realize how far we’ve come. I can’t help but smile in realizing that six cities including: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Boston and now New York we’ve created 100 symbols sketches with the help of at least 150 people.While each event varied in location, the intended final outcome always remained the same. To create a space where designers, creative thinkers, and topic enthusiast could create civic symbols for the public domain. In San Francisco, we began the series with 311 services as our theme of choice, where eager local designers and a government worker who’d driven from the state capital on a Saturday morning shared their passion and opinions.The following weekend at the Los Angeles Iconathon attendees got a chance to hear Amanda Shaffer (Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College) set the stage for designing around food and health symbols. These symbols could very well help provide more access to healthy foods. Discussions about obesity and general health in America flooded the space as the community co-created.In trying to create a universal visual language in a democratic format, it only made sense that we try Democracy. So we headed to Chicago with Democracy as our theme. There we had the honor of working in SimpleScotts studio. Despite the thunder, rain, slightly remote location on public transit, and a sick guest speaker, we had a full house. As attendees entered the space drenched from the downpour I shook hands with some of the most enthusiastic groups of people. SimpleScott came to the rescue with his talk on the importance of simplicity in trying to convey a message, in relation to his work with the Obama campaign. The remainder of the day at the Chicago Iconathon we covered symbols such as human rights, citizen, private ownership, and many, many more symbols of Democracy.Seattle’s event was a modest, but fruitful one with only a handful of participants who covered a wide range of symbols focused on community. Icons such as home owner, bake sale, neighbors and block watch captain where created. Hosted in Seattle Art Institute, we had Jared Nickerson share his creative process to get the groups creative juices flowing. With community members, organizers, and a few skilled designers they created a creative community for the day.After a great tour of west coast cities, we found ourselves on the east coast with an equal representation of innovative people, hosting our Educational themed Iconathon in the MIT’s Center for Civic Media. Our welcoming words came from Boston Public Scools Lee McGuire, Chief Communications Officer followed by another Boston innovator, Deb Socia, Executive Director OpenAirBoson. And lastly Ideo’s Kristy Tilman reminded us of the importance of symbols in students’ lives. Together they shared their stories of hope for the icons that were to be created that day. We had the chance to brainstorm concepts that could potentially be used on a day-to-day basis in the learning process of children in Boston and across the nation. We created symbols as obvious and necessary as student and backpack and as complicated and interesting as quite zone, reading zone, report card, and band.Our last and final Iconathon for this series brought us to New York where I can actually hear some of the symbols we conceptualized come to life: subway tunnel, maps, bridge, hybrid, neighborhoods, detour, helmet, and lastly “check bag” — a symbol that means more today than it might have 10 years ago.Jake Barton, founder of Local Projects, shared his thoughts on how our work could enhance the public space, and Frank Herbbert, director of CivicWorks at OpenPlans, summed up the success of these events, the culture they inspired, and what fuels our actions: “open source is [our] ethos…” Again and again we heard the terms: universal symbol, cross platform, cross culture, and usability. Everyone understood that we have the imperative to design better, together, as our community grows and becomes more diverse. The world is changing and so are we.The New York Iconathon marked the end of the national effort from the Noun Project and Code for America to unite creative thinkers, designers, and passionate voices with informative speakers who provided invaluable context to the creation of universal symbols. But we don’t suspect this community will stop there; there’s already interest to continue “iconathoning” in other cities and even other countries. In the spirit of Code for America, they are taking a notion and turning it into a seamless language.I’d like to thank all those who came out across the nation to help design an icon or two. And just as important as the icons is the community, and everyone who showed up helped create the environment for it to come together. So as Frank stated earlier today, “let us raise our hands in empowerment.”

We're at that six month mark... with so much to do! Tonight was our summer openhouse, which was phenomenal a great number of people showed up to show their support and may I just say, how awesome this whole experience has been. It seems like everyone that walks through the CfA doors are passionate about using technology to create lasting effects in their cities.

Being that it was our open house it only made sense to showcase the methods to our madness.

So much has gone on in the last few months.
Im currently a fellow at Code for America where we kicked off our 11 month fellowship in Jan. of 2011.
Our website reads "Helping goverments work better for everone with the people and power of the web"
And to some extent thats true, but what this tag line fails to point out, is that Code for America is an organization powered by people who care about things that most people simply complain about. These are people who use their amazing computer skills
to make governments better through technology. As a designer I am humbled to be surrounded by such amazing programers, coders, developers and just people who are "civic minded" beyond belief.

I've spent the last few months learning about how governments work for their people.

Barely a moment to breathe. Still I was fortunate enough to do this project on the side.
As part of an instillation set in The California Art Institute SF's lobby where an assortment of different wooden panels will be placed. With a bit of a rushed deadline and an urge to bring out the acrylics and wood burner, this is the final product.
With production ending promptly at 3:15 a.m. on one quite Tues. night.

Unicorn Wednesday

In honor of our Unicorn Wednesdays,...
we decided to make a unicorn cake. Don't be fooled by the box that we bought inorder to transport it from point a to point b, we made it from bottom up, first rainbow layer to the tip of the horn and its majestic mane.
The statue, was the 'award.' I made with some of that instant dry clay, Overstreet was the one to 'bedazzle' it.

Once I screen printed the last T's I realized that the color pallet needed to be something a little more toned down. So I resorted to a more pastel set of colors, the other shirts I screen printed are actually the color of the guitar with the guitar on a pearl white. I don't think anyone grows out of certain habits, I have one in particular which I still tend to come back to. When my I used to go away for the summers; I would always make it a habit to look for rocks or objects in the shapes of hearts to bring back to my mom or give to her when she made it out to Santa Cruz. This one I found this weekend, and with a lil help of my mac ended up with this. This isnt the rock from yosemite, vegas, DC, Tahoe or Mexico that I brought back it's simply a leaf outside a friends house.But it only seemed fitting that I share it with my mom.

Once I started with the black ink images I realized I missed the colors that add a whole differnt feel to something no matter how simple. I suppose these two are just a product of my boredom while at the same time... a product of my missing a chance to just doodle. With my nifty little crayola water colors and some drab weather this is what I came up with. But the sunset is actually a sunset I was admiring this past Saturday, its was one of those moments where you really got to slow down and enjoy natures beauty.

Bringing back the Classics

Now that I've got a decent scanner at hand I'm a little more motivated to get stuff scanned and edited digitally. These two are after a nice long walk in Berlin after a long day. Guess you could call it visual venting. These ones I'm fine with as as. So you could say I'm reviving some of my Berlin sketches here, uploading some of the more random sketches that I kinda like.

I've always loved fountain pens but due to the (unplanned permanent messes they tend to create), but with the classes I have this quarter I had no choice but to give in to the temptation. I bought a set of broad nib pens, and tons of ink. I got to the basic calligraphy, feeling of the music, and then happy little accidents. The more I loosened up the more fun I had and I created some tiny but detailed faces, or just let things flow... the result a lot of this.

This is one of the windiest springs Ive ever known. The one thing I love about it is 'the beauty that is leaves dancing' in the wind. I cant really say it any other way. Swirling is another word that comes to mind...It seems as though half the times that you do see it - its off some cliche movie clip with some kind of classical music, suspenseful even or the dramatic, changing of the seasons clip - but still I know more times that I can count Ive painted this feeling... and I'm tempted to do it again.

Yesterday was one of those days that make it from beginning to end are great.I got to take some time to myself after getting red cross certified. I had no where to go just the urge to drive, a sketchbook and all my colors and pens that fit in my art box. Which I love. Those things are great, the perfect sized container for all my 'art stuff'.I drove out to the little place where you can see it all at half moon bay, a slightly hi den cove? I dunno but the sun set made my day. The right play list a warm sweater to fight the breaking wind and I got to just sit and draw. I miss the ability to do just that - carelessly, I used to be able to just sit and draw but now to sit and draw means your sacrificing time to some other more important activity.

I've always kind of collected quotes, from people that I'm inspired by both historic and relative to my daily life. The ones that stand out the most in my collection are the ones that I've acquired over the years of simply listening. And today I got one worth remembering. It was great because I was at the farmers Market buying my fresh veggies I overheard the most interesting conversation from the woman behind the various dry fruits stand. She was not shy to yell out "..hope your condition gets better!" to which a startled Mexican worker, dirty from all the boxes he was pushing around responded "What? Loneliness? that's a lifestyle you slowly get used to." Sad isnt it!? He said it in such a voice I almost wanted to cry. The crazy part is this man and woman both had been talking sweetly, as if they were a couple minutes prior to this little schpeal which left me pretty confused. Theres my random rant. I just gets weirder and weirder for me to finally understand what people are saying around me now that I'm back in the states.

Catching Up.

Back from a quarter of studying abroad and as much as I tried, to keep it consistent It didn't really last,.. I kept more of a photo journal than a blog of any sort.

In short..

To live in Berlin for 3 months was probably one of the greatest experiences anyone could ask for. Plus I got lucky with a group of individuals that I'll never forget; each one shared something with me that I'll always have, I learned from them all! We were lucky. We lived like the cast of Friends all on one floor with the ability to walk into each others room and just hang, vent, or just be in Europe in awe together.

The ART. Museums were insane but the real mind boggling art was on the streets. With thought provoking stencils just around every other corner Berlin was a haven for any street artist.

The food - We tried just about everything from Kat and Ruths infamous stinky cheese, the very Berlin Turkish Donner, overpriced slice of Ham in Paris, baguettes , Insanely good hot chocolate in Venice, far too many dumplings in Prague aka Praha, and ITALIAN Pizza and wine, artichokes and chocolates - too good to think of for too long without causing some sort of salivation and deep yearning for authentic Italian. Mitte Cafe = the best cup of Chai in Berlin. Mmmmmm....All of course in candle light, no matter how cheap a place was there was always room for a little candle light meal- with absolutely no rush.

We learned Indulging in different cultures from Rome to Paris that the average person changes personas - Germans are awesome once you get to know them but don't expect a random smile on the street. Italians are absolute lovers of life. Sweet and as joyous as they come. French are French not nice, though they can be, they aren't always. (nice)

Trains our mode of transportations. We quickly learned to Watch your food, someone might steal your rice cakes and spinach dip. Train rides don't always go according to planned although with the right people go by alot quicker. Sketchbooks make time go by alot faster and ipods make loud obnoxious things/people disappear.

My roommates rocked and miss em like crazy. Thank god for technology.
